This theatrical movie based on the television series (which was also based on a popular multiform robot toyline) did not go over very well at the box office. The movie takes place in 2005, twenty years after the television series, and chronicles the efforts of the heroic Autobots to defend their homeworld Cybertron from the evil Decepticons. Both factions are seething with anger, and that hatred has blinded them to a hideous menace headed their way. That hideous menace is the colossal planet known as Unicron, who has been ready to consume anything that stands in its way. The only thing that can stop Unicron is the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, which is possessed by the Autobots and which the Decepticons, through Unicron's orders, plan to take away from them. Goofs (at around 28 mins) Astrotrain can apparently change his size to be able to accommodate all the other Decepticons (who are generally about as big as he is) inside himself when he transforms into his alternate modes. This strange phenomenon is called 'mass shifting', but one particular scene takes it to the extreme: The Constructicons merge to form the gigantic Devastator, inside Astrotrain.

This is considered to be an error, since for the Constructicons to be able to unite, Astrotrain would have to grow immensely huge, bigger than even the inconsistent senses of the Transformers cartoon would allow. Transformers the movie is a retro 80's cult classic that not only took the original series forward in the animation department but also took the story forward in to the future with the next generation of Transformers. The plot is a recreation of the King Arthur legend of a young man trying to find his way with out knowing that he is destine to rule his tribe one day. All the fan favorites are here with new ones to be cherishing, and the soundtrack to this movie is probably one of the best sounding albums to come out of the 80's. This movie still holds up as one of the best TV to Movie translations of all time, and it still kicks major league butt as well. The only drawback that it has that they did not make a sequel to this classic in animation.

A must own for all animation fans.
